Ali Mahir Pasha again resigns from appointment as prime minister of Egypt. General Muhammad Naguib takes over post of president, prime minister, minister of war and commander-in-chief of the army.

Desmond Tutu is enthroned as Archbishop of Cape Town - the first black archbishop of the South African Anglican church.
