1902, 1 May - Boer War: The Holkrantz Massacre
Under orders from Commandant-General Louis Botha, Potgieter's commando burns several Zulu villages, loots cattle and grain, and drives the inhabitants towards Vryheid.

1907, 1 May
France declares its support for British interests in the Congo rather than those of Belgium.

1909, 1 May
American ex-president Theodore Roosevelt kills three lions whilst on safari in British East Africa (now Kenya).

1915, 1 May - World War I: South West Africa
South African prime minister Louis Botha leads the army in the occupation of German South West Africa (now Namibia).

1966, 1 May
In response to the Yemen dispute, Egyptian President Gamal Abdul Nasser threatens to invade Saudi Arabia.
