Leaders of Mauritius Since Independence

A list of Mauritian leaders since gaining independence on 12 March 1968

Mauritius was granted independence in 12 March 1968 (within the commonwealth), with Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, leader of the Parti Travailliste (PT, Mauritius Labour Party), as prime minister and with a governor-general representing the Queen as head of state.

With the downturn in sugar prices, social unrest in the late 70s and early 80s led to a change of government, Anerood Jugnauth of the Mouvement Socialiste Mauricien (MSM, Militant Socialist Movement) took power on 12 March 1982.

On 12 March 1992 Mauritius became a republic with first Veerasamy Ringadoo and then, three months later, Cassam Uteem as president, Jugnauth remained head of government as prime minister. On 22 December 1995 Seewoosagur Ramgoolam's son Navinchandra, took power for the PT. Five years later Jugnauth returned as prime minister for the MSM, followed by Paul Raymond Bérenger for the Mouvement Militant Mauricien (MMM, Mauritian Militant Movement). On 5 July 2005 Navinchandra Ramgoolam was returned for a second time by the electorate.
