Mohandas Karamchand Ghandi finally reaches an agreement with the South African Union government over rights of Indian nationals (voluntary registration, poll tax, and recognition of Indian marriages).

1971, 25 January
General Idi Amin Dada takes power in Uganda by military coup while the existing president, Milton Obote, is at a Commonwealth meeting in Singapore. (This is a pre-emptive strike since President Obote has arranged for General Amin to be arrested and replaced as chief of staff.)
