Following a parliamentary debate, the Belgian government announces that it will annex the Congo from King Leopold II.

1940, 19 August - World War II: East Africa
British Somaliland has been yielded to Italy following their invasion which started on 4 August.

1968, 19 August
Nigeria's Federal troops have launched a major offensive against multiple targets in Biafra. Despite claims of 2,000 people being massacred, the leader of the Nigerian military government, General Yakubu Gowon, has stated that his troops are 'behaving correctly'.

1972, 19 August
King Hassan of Morocco has revoked the posts of Defence Minister and army Chief-of-Staff and taken unilateral control of all armed forces in the country.

1983, 19 August
French Foreign Legion troops in armoured cars are now patrolling in the disputed zone of northern Chad.
