1932, 1 August
An initiative is started to end slavery in Abyssinia by Emperor Haile Salasse.

1961, 1 August
Cyrille Adoula is named prime minister of Congo by President Joseph Kasavubu.

1962, 1 August
An assassination attempt is made on Ghanaian President Kwame (Francis Nwia Kofie) Nkrumah. The bomb explosion kills four people and injures another fifty-six. Four years ago he passed the Preventive Detention Act which he has used to imprison over 1000 of his political and social opponents.

1966, 1 August
Lieutenant Colonel Yakubu Gowon ousts Johnson Thomas Umurakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi as Head of the Military Government in a military coup.

1969, 1 August
Pope Paul VI attempts to mediate between Biafra and Nigeria.
