French and Spanish representatives meet with Riff envoys but fail to reach an armistice agreement.

1946, 18 April
The League of Nations is officially dissolved.

1950, 18 April
Destour (nationalist movement) Party's independence demands are announced by Habib Ali Bourguiba in Tunisia.

1954, 18 April
For a second time, Nasser takes presidency away from Naguib. (See Suez Crisis timeline.)

1961, 18 April
In return for the release of Jomo Kenyetta, the Kenyan African National Union (ZANU) agrees to take part in negotiations for governmental reform.

1971, 18 April
Libya joins the United Arab Republic (Egypt, Iraq, and Syria) to form a Federation of Arab Republics.

1980, 18 April
Zimbabwe proclaimed an independent republic. Dr Cannan Sodindo Banana is inaugurated as president, and Robert Gabriel Mugabe as prime minister.

1982, 18 April
Capital of Zimbabwe is renamed Harare (old name was Salisbury).

1990, 18 April
During a parliamentary speech, President FW de Klerk rules out the possibility of Black Majority rule in South Africa.

1996, 18 April
During an attack by Islamic terrorists near the Pyramids at Giza, 18 tourists are killed.
