Apartheid Era Laws: Transkei Constitution Act No 48 of 1963

By , About.com Guide

Definition:

The Transkei Constitution Act No 48 of 1963 (commenced 30 May) created the first of South Africa's semi-independent, self-governing territories. (Although it was nine years before Bophuthatswana, Ciskei, and Lebowa were proclaimed self-governing territories in 1972; Venda and Gazankulu in 1973; QwaQwa in 1974; and KwaZulu in 1977.)

Independence was 'gained' by Transkei on 26 October through the Republic of Transkei Constitution Act of 1976.

Repealed by the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa Act No 200 of 1993.
