29 1935 Haile Selassie, Emperor of Ethiopia, warns the League of Nations that he is going to mobilise his forces because of threats of invasion by Italy.
29 1942 World War II: East Africa
South African troops are landed at Tulearon (Toliara) on the south west coast of Madagascar, to support the East African force based at Tananarive (Antananarivo).
30 1920 France takes over the mandate for Togo (previously a German colony).
30 1942 World War II: North Africa
As part of the lead up to Operation 'Lightfoot', two brigades form the 44th Division (XIII Corps under Lieutenant-General Sir Brian Horrocks) attack the German defences in the Munassib Depression. Falling under heavy fire, and suffering many casualties, they pull back.
30 1966 Botswana (previously known as Bechuanaland) achieves independence (within the Commonwealth) from Britain.

1 1952 The British colonial government in Kenya enact emergency measures to combat the growing threat from the Mau Mau.
1 1960 Nigeria achieves independence (within the Commonwealth) from Britain. Two years later to the day, Nigeria is declared a Republic, with Benjamin Nnamdi Azikiwe as president (he had been governor-general since independence).
1 1961 The British territory of Cameroon South is united with Cameroon (previously run as the French mandate Cameroun) to form the United Republic of Cameroon.
2 1958 Guinée Française achieves independence from France as Guinea with Ahmed Sékou Touré as president.
2 1986 President Reagan decision not to impose sanctions on South Africa is overridden by Senate veto, 78 votes to 21.
3 1935 In the first major attack since Italy invaded Abyssinia, Italian planes bomb Adwa and Adigrat — possibly pay back for Italy's defeat by Ethiopian forces in 1896.
3 1991 It is announced that the South African author Nadine Gordimer is to receive the Nobel prize for literature.
3 1993 Twelve US soldiers are killed during an abortive attempt to capture the leaders of Mohammed Farah Aidid's militia.
4 1966 The Kingdom of Lesotho (previously known as Basutoland) achieves independence (within the Commonwealth) from Britain. In doing so it remains politically separate from the Republic of South Africa, which completely surrounds the country.
5 1960 The White minority in South Africa votes for the creation of a republic and full independence from Britain.
