Extracts from Mandela's Prison Letters

Following his conviction in the 1963 Treason Trial Nelson Mandela was transferred to the jail on Robben Island. He was classified as a Group D prisoner, which meant he could receive only one letter every six months. Incoming mail was usually heavily censored, and outgoing mail written under very strict regulations.

In his autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom Mandela writes: "Communication with one's family is a human right; it should not be restricted by the artificial gradations of a prison system. But it was one of the facts of prison life."

In these extracts from Mandela's prison letters he writes to Winnie, about problems, and about regrets.
