Ian Douglas Smith, Southern Rhodesia Prime Minister since 13 April, arrives in London to discuss independence.

1966, 6 September
South African prime minister, Hendrik Verwoerd, is assassinated whilst in parliament.

1968, 6 September
Swaziland achieves independence from British administration. King Sobhuza II, of the ruling Dlamini house, is recognised as constitutional monarch (paramount chief).

1969, 6 September
Colonel Muammar Muhammad Gaddafi, the chairman of the Revolutionary Command Council, Libya's leader since King Muhammad Idris I as-Sanusi was ousted on 1 September, is formally recognised by the United States.
