Habib Ali Bourguiba and the leaders of the Neo Destour party in Tunisia are put under house arrest.

1960, 3 September
Julius Kambarage Nyerere becomes Chief Minister (later to be Prime Minister and then President) when his Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) party won 70 of the 71 seats in an election.

1987, 3 September
President Jean-Baptiste Bagaza of Burundi is ousted by military coup, Pierre Buyoya replaces him as the Chairman of the Military Committee for National Salvation.
