Southern African Rock Art

Animals

From Alistair Boddy-Evans, About.com

San rock art often depicts the animals found in Southern Africa. Such images are skilfully rendered, with a variety of poses, and a close understanding of the animal's form - so the depiction of an eland will usually show the correct shape of its leg, the fetlock, a tufted tail, etc.

It was once believed that rock art was just a record of San hunting forays, but what historical records exist tell us that the San were more dependent on vegetation and fruit foraged by women, and whilst the men provided around 40% of the food by hunting, this was mainly small animals caught by snares.

It is recognised today that San rock art had a significant cultural and spiritual importance and that its study can give us further insight into the San way of life.
