French troops have occupied the Bilad al-siba, an under-populated desert region in southern Morocco.

1963, 25 May
The leaders of 30 African nations form the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

1969, 25 May
In Sudan Ja'far Muhammad an-Numeiry, the Chairman of the Revolutionary Command Council, overthrows the government of Ismail al-Azhari, the Chairman of the Council of Sovereignty, in a military coup.

1977, 25 May
US raises concern over the presence of Cuban military advisers in Ethiopia.

1986, 25 May
At the Crossroads squatter camp near Cape Town, 30,000 blacks are forcibly removed from their homes.

1991, 25 May
Jews are airlifted out of Ethiopia by Israeli aircraft.

1994, 25 May
The UN arms embargo on South Africa is finally lifted following the election of Nelson Mandela as president of the government of National Unity.
