1950, 20 June
South African Communist Party dissolves itself fearing legal action by the Apartheid government.

1943, 20 June - World War II: North Africa
Allied aircraft arrive in North Africa after a bombing raid in Germany - this long range operation is the first of the recently proposed 'Lancaster shuttle syste'.

1961, 20 June
General Nasser, president of Egypt, announces a plan to protect the ancient temples at Abu Simbel by moving them to a nearby site above the expected floodwater level of the Aswan Dam. Abu Simbel is the site of two rock-cut temples of Rameses II - the facade of the largest one is particularly known for its gigantic seated figures.

1965, 20 June
Following an unexpected coup by his defence minister Colonel Houari Boumedienne, the Algerian President Ben Bella is arrested and placed in detention.

1990, 20 June
Nelson Mandela receives a ticker tape welcome in New York.
