1900, 8 June - Boer War: Van Wyk's Kop
General General Sir Redvers Buller' forces attack Botha's Pass, Natal . After a five hour battle the Republican forces retreat defeated. A key position, Van Wyk's Kop, was too lightly defended (only 25 burgers) to resist the South African Light Horse. Buller is now free to enter the Orange Free State.

1904, 8 June
US Marines land at the Moroccan port of Tangier.

1962, 8 June
Following the burning of Algiers University yesterday, the Organisation de l'Armee Secrete (OAS) terrorist campaign continues with a bomb attack on the Hassi Touareg old filed - most of the country's wealth is dependent on its oil resources. The OAS, a secret (terrorist) French army organisation, is opposed to the withdrawal of French troops and the granting of independence to Algeria.

1977, 8 June
Commonwealth leaders issue a joint statement warning southern African states to drop Apartheid practices or face bloodshed.
