1936, 25 July
The Italian conquest of Abyssinia is recognised by the German government.

1940, 25 July - World War II: North Africa
The British Naval bases at Alexandria and Haifa are attacked by Italian bombers. Forty-six are reported dead.

1942, 25 July - World War II: North Africa
American president, Franklin Roosevelt, convinced that an invasion of Europe ('Operation Round-Up') was not feasible in the near future, ignores the advice of his Chief-of-Staff, General Marshall, and insists that 'Operation Torch' be implemented by 30 October rather than by the start of December.

1957, 25 July
Habib Ali Bourguiba ousts Muhammad al-Amin ibn Muhammad, the Pasha Bey of Tunis, proclaims a republic and himself president of Tunisia.

1971, 25 July
Dr Christiaan Neethling Barnard carries out the first combined heart and lung transplant at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. Dr Barnard had carried out the first heart transplant back on 3 December 1967.

1991, 25 July
Nine whites are killed in an Anglican church in South Africa by black gunmen.

1996, 25 July
Sylvestre Ntibantunganya, President of Burundi, is overthrown by a military coup. He is replaced by President Pierre Buyoya amid fears of further massacres in central Africa.
