Sarili (1820-1878)

Definition:

Paramount chief of the Xhosa from 1835 and chief of the Gcaleka. Son of Hintsa, the previous paramount chief. His power was limited as a result of the Frontier Wars of 1846-47 and 1850-53. He was partly responsible for the Xhosa Cattle-Killing of 1856-57 when he accepted Nongqawuse's prophecies and ordered his people to slaughter their herds and destroy crops. Died in the 9th Frontier War (1878-1879).
