National Union of South African Students (NUSAS)

By , About.com Guide

Definition: The National Union of South African Students was established in 1924 intending to bring all South African students, black and white, together. Its non-racial stance brought it into conflict with South

Africa's Apartheid regime. It's mainly white, liberal background brought it into disagreement with Afrikaans-speaking members, causing a rift in the early 1930s. Black students from establishments such as Fort Hare were admitted from 1945.

In 1969, black students under the leadership of Steve Biko broke away from NUSAS to form the South African Students' Organisation (SASO). The departure of black students left the NUSAS marginalized in South African politics.
