Jameson Raid

By Alistair Boddy-Evans, About.com

Definition:

A plot, now attributed to Cecil Rhodes, and led by Dr. Leander Starr Jameson to overthrow the government of the Transvaal, through a raid form neighbouring Bechuanaland (now Botswana) and an uprising of Uitlanders. The raid was a failure and Jameson was captured which his men and handed over to the British for trial. The embarrassment resulted in the downfall of Rhodes and speeded up the path to the Anglo-Boer War (1899 – 2001).
