Name given to the migration of Afrikaners from the British ruled Cape Colony in 1836 37. They were unhappy with British interference in their way of life, especially the result of Britain's abolition of slavery, which led to a labour shortage for which they felt they should receive compensation. Also of significance was the pressure over land and the influence that various missionary bodies had on British policy in the region.
The Voortrekkers, the Afrikaners who took part, headed out to the interior of what is now South Africa, crossing the Orange and Vaal rivers, as well as heading into what is now KwaZulu Natal. During the 1830s they clashed with the Zulu and Ndebele, who's lands they were occupying. The Great Trek eventually led to the establishment of two Boer republics.
