Determinative

By Alistair Boddy-Evans, About.com

Definition:

One of the types of Ancient Egyptian hieroglyph. The determinative is a sign which gives the meaning of a word. The determinative is usually placed at the end of a word (but not after pictograms) and can therefore aid interpretation of hieroglyphic writing, which does not use spaces or punctuation. The determinative does not contribute to the phonetic value of the word.
