Commonwealth of Nations

Definition:

An association of over fifty sovereign states (the United Kingdom and a number of former dominions, crown colonies, protectorates and mandates) who maintain a cooperative relationship over trade, education, sport, etc, and recognize the British Crown as the symbolic head of the organization.

Created by the Statute of Westminster in 1931, it can be seen as the first concrete move by Britain towards independence for the various parts of its Empire.

Also Known As:

'British Commonwealth of Nations' or 'The Commonwealth'.
