Bantustan

By , About.com Guide

Definition:

Under the Apartheid system of 'separate development' nine Bantu groups were assigned their own homelands or bantustan. Movement outside of these homelands was strictly regulated. In the late 1980s several of the bantustans were given 'independence'.

When Apartheid finally fell in the 1990s, the bantustans were reincorporated into South Africa.
