According to mythology, Bayajidda is the founder of the Hausa City States. Oral tradition gives his origins in the Middle East (some say Baghdad), and traveled across northern Africa through Borno. In Borno he is said to have married a local princess, but fled after a dispute with her father.

It is disputed whether Bayajidda represents an actual person or is an amalgamation of all those involved in forming the Hausa City States.
