Democratic Republic of the Congo

Once the Kongo kingdom, Belgium's King Leopold II claimed most of the Congo basin in 1876 - the most brutal of all European colonial experiments. Belgium took over the country in 1908, after international outcry, as the Belgian Congo. Independence was achieved in 1960 under the name Congo-Kinshasa. The country was renamed Zaire in 1971 and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (or DRC) in 1997.
