Burkina FasoFrom the 16th to the early 19th century this was the kingdom of Ouagadougo, part of the Mossi empire. In the early C19th the Mossi empire broke down into internal warfare. At the end of the 19th century the warlord Samori Ture was expelled by the French and it became part of French West Africa. It gained independence from the French as Upper Volta in 1960 and was renamed Burkina Faso in 1984.
