1955, 24 August
Talks between Egypt and Israel in an attempt to end disputes over the Gaza Strip fail. Fighting is expected to flare up between the two countries soon. The talks were doomed after Israeli forces attacked Egyptian troops in the Egyptian held region on 28 February this year, ending six years of truce (signed on 24 February 1949).

1960, 24 August
Ali Maher Pasha, who was Prime Minister of Egypt on four occasions (the most recent in 1952), dies.

1965, 24 August
An agreement to end the Yemen War is reached between Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
