1903, 30 April
St. John Brodrick, the War secretary informs the British House of Commons that the campaign in Somaliland is to be abandoned and that Muhammed Abdalah Hassan (the 'Mad Mullah') will not be further pursued.

1936, 30 April
The Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, is lost to the Italians.

1956, 30 April
As part of the ten-year progress (begun in 1950) to independence under an Italian administered UN trusteeship, the first elected Somaliland parliament is convened.

1979, 30 April
The cargo ship Ashdod is the first Israeli ship to pass through the Suez Canal for over 50 years.

1982, 30 April
Zambian president Kenneth David Kaunda meets with South African president PW Botha in Botswana. Kaunda is yet again criticised in the African press for meeting with representatives of the Apartheid regime.
