1900, 24 April - Boer War: Espionage
A dynamite factory, which forms part of the Begbie Engineering Workshop, Johannesburg, is destroyed in an explosion. The destruction is blamed on British sabotage.

1979, 24 April
Abel Tendekayi Muzorewa's United African National Council has won 51 of the 72 seats available to black candidates (28 are reserved for white MP's) in national elections in Rhodesia. He will be inaugurated as prime minister of the new Republic of Zimbabwe on 1 June.

1993, 24 April
Death of Oliver Tambo (born 1917): South African political leader, co-founder of the ANC's Youth League, and president of the ANC from 1980 to 1991.
