1834, 22 April
The island of St Helena in the south Atlantic becomes a British Crown Colony.

1901, 22 April - Boer War: Concentration Camps
The British Secretary for War, St. John Broderick, has told the House of Commons that every effort is being made to improve conditions in concentration camps in South Africa. The camps currently hold over 75,000 Boers, mostly women and children.

1903, 22 April
A new Sultan of Morocco, Muldi Mohammed, is installed.

1931, 22 April
The Egyptian government signs it first 'friendship' treaty with another Arab state: Iraq.

1941, 22 April - World War II: North Africa
Tripoli is under bombardment by British warships.

1943, 22 April - World War II: North Africa
With supply lines across the Mediterranean almost completely cut, the Axis forces around Tunis are in dire straits. The Allied offensive steps up with attacks at Longstop Hill and Peter's Corner.

1960, 22 April
1,575 people are now being detained under South Africa's state of emergency.

1961, 22 April
French army rebels seize Algiers.

1980, 22 April
Thirteen ministers of the recently ousted government (William Richard Tolbert's True Whig Party) in Liberia are executed by order of the 'Redemption Council' of Sergeant Samuel Kanyon Doe's ruling military regime. Only four of the thirteen were originally condemned to death for "treason, corruption, and violation of human rights" but the Redemption Council overruled the verdict. They were tied to stakes erected on the beach and shot, according to eye witnesses.

1984, 22 April
Britain breaks all diplomatic relations with Libya.

1990, 22 April
1990 A coup against the 'Chairman of the Armed Forces Ruling Council' (the effective president) in Nigeria, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has proved unsuccessful.

1995, 22 April
Hutu refugees in a camp at Kibeho, Zaire, flee when soldiers open fire. Thousands are either shot or killed in the ensuing stampede.
