1843, 11 April
Gambia and Sierra Leone are split (Banjul, the capital of The Gambia was administered by British authorities in Sierra Leone).

1894, 11 April
Uganda is declared a British protectorate, having previously been under the charter of the British East Africa Company.

1900, 11 April - Boer War: Paardeberg
General PA Cronje and several other burghers captured at Paardeberg arrive at 'prison' island of St Helena.

1902, 11 April - Boer War: Roodewal
General Kemp, in charge of the Lemmer, Du Toit, Liebenberg, Celliers, and Potgieter commandos (approximately 2,600 burghers), suffers a defeat at Roodewal, Transvaal.

1905, 11 April
A bridge and railway line across the Zambezi River, close to the Victoria Falls is completed.

1926, 11 April
Mussolini is greeted with royal honors when he lands in Africa.

1938, 11 April
Captain CD Barnard begins a record breaking flight from London to Cape Town.

1943, 11 April
End of a four day meeting between Hitler and Mussolini over failure to hold North Africa.

1954, 11 April
General China, the operation undertaken by British authorities against the Mau Mau in Kenya, has failed.

1956, 11 April
Algerian Assembly is dissolved by French authorities.

1980, 11 April
Dr Canaan Sodindo Banana is selected as the first President of the newly independent Republic of Zimbabwe. He is officially inaugurated on 18 April.

1990, 11 April
The government of Angola agrees to hold peace talks with União Nacional para a Independência Total de Angola (UNITA, National Union for the Total Independence of Angola) in Portugal.

1994, 11 April
Mokdad Sifi is appointed as prime minister of Algeria.
