Apartheid Era Laws: Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act No 55 of 1949

Definition:

The Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act No 55 of 1949 (commenced 8 July 1949) forbade marriages between Whites and other races. Between 1946 and the enactment of this law, only 75 mixed marriages had been recorded, compared with some 28,000 White marriages.

Repealed by the Immorality and Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Amendment Act No 72 of 1985
