Angola
Once a Portuguese colony, Angola achieved independence in 1975 but has experienced 25 years of civil war since then. During the Cold War Angola acted as a primary base of operations for the Soviet-backed MPLA and Western supported UNITA. Peace was only achieved in 2002.
