Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton by Edward Rice
When this book was first published in hardback in 1990 it had the subtitle "The secret agent who made the pilgrimage to Mecca, discovered the kama sutra, and brought the Arabian Knights to the west" - which manages to completely ignore Burton's journeys of discovery in Africa. Fortunately there is sufficient reference to his time exploring Egypt and Central Africa, but you will find his other exploits just as captivating and you will almost certainly want to read the whole biography. This is an essential addition to your bookshelf. |
