23 1961 Moïse Kapenda Tshombe leads the Congo province of Katanga into secession.
23 1962 President Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, a leading exponent of Pan-Africanism, orders the release of the last of his political prisoners, previously detained under the Preventive Detention Act of 1958.
24 1951 British run Tripolitania and Cyrenaica join with French administered Fezzan to form newly independent Libya.
24 1980 Ex-Emperor Jean-Bédel Bokassa of the Central African Republic, CAR, is sentenced to death while in exile in France.
25 1918 Birth of Anwar el-Sadat, Egyptian premier. (Died 6 October, 1981)
25 1979 Major restoration project for the sphinx starts in Egypt.
26 1901 Uganda railroad from Mombassa to Lake Victoria is completed.
26 1915 The German gunboat, the Kingani, is captured by the British on Lake Tanganyika. It is removed by portage through the jungle of the Belgian Congo.
26 1964 American Max Conrad sets a new world non-stop-flight record with his 7,878 mile journey from Cape Town, south Africa, to St Petersburg, Florida.
26 1975 Cariango, Angola is taken by Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola, (MPLA, Popular Liberation Movement of Angola) guerrillas.
27 1956 5,580 Egyptian prisoners of war are exchanged for four Israelis held by Egypt following the Tripartite Invasion.
27 1960 France detonates its third atomic device in the Sahara.
28 1903 French Congo is split into Ubangi-Shari, Chad, Gabon, and Middle Congo.
28 1948 Egyptian premier, Mahmoud Fatimy, is assassinated by a member of Al Ikhwan al Muslimun (the Muslim Brotherhood).
28 1958 Patrice Emery Lumumba, head of the Congolese National Movement, declares that "independence is a right, not a privilege."
29 1930 Tombs of the third dynasty Egyptian kings are excavated at Ur.
29 1952 A coelacanth, once thought to have been extinct for 75 million years, is caught off the Comoros and sent to scientists in South Africa.
29 1992 President Daniel Torotich arap Moi wins the first multi-party elections held in Kenya for 26 years.
