29 1974 Muhammad Ali defeats George Foreman in world heavyweight championship, Zaire.
30 1942 Montgomery, and the Eighth Army, is triumphant at El Alamein.
30 1952 Troops round up 500 Mau Mau suspects in Kenya.
30 1956 France and Britain instruct Egypt and Israel to withdraw from the Suez Canal.
30 1961 Congolese army begins an offensive against Katangan rebels.
30 1969 Nairobi President Kanyatta bans the Kenya Peoples Union and arrests its leader Oginga Odinga.
30 1978 Reports of fighting between Ugandan and Tanzanian troops in Uganda.
31 1956 Following a 12 hour ultimatum to Egypt and Israel, British and French forces bombard military airfields near Cairo in the Suez Canal Zone. Colonel Nasser calls it "an attack on the rights and dignity of Egypt." US officials, convinced that they are working in collusion with Israel, censure Britain and France during a UN Security Council debate, requesting that "all UN members refrain from the use of force or threat of force and refrain from giving aid to Israel."
31 1976 Rhodesian commandos launch a raid across the border into Mozambique.
31 1995 Nigerian political activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa is one of eight people sentenced to death for the death of four Ogoni leaders (who died during a protest rally). Saro-Wiwa prominently protested on behalf of the Ogonis against pollution of their land by old companies. The murders are believed to have been carried out on the instructions of General Sani Abacha who heads the counties military regime.

1 1911 Italy performs first aerial bombing on Tanguira oasis in Libya.
1 1954 Nationalist rioters led by Ahmed Ben Bella (based in Cairo) have wreaked destruction across the Algerian district of Aures.
1 1959 Patrice Lumumba, Congolese nationalist, is arrested following two nights of unrest.
1 1991 President Kenneth Kaunda is defeated by Frederick Chiluba in the Zambia's first multi-party elections for 23 years.
2 1930 Haile Selassie is crowned Emperor of Ethiopia
2 1951 More British troops are sent to the Suez Canal Zone (the biggest troop airlift since the Second World War).
2 1969 300,000 refugees in camps near the Nigerian border are facing starvation after an argument between the Nigerian government and the Red Cross. The Red Cross has been sending supplies to relief camps in "rebel" Biafra, but has been ordered out by the Nigerian government.
3 1942 Montgomery's forces break through Rommel's front line at El Alamein.
3 1956 Israeli troops are said to be in control of the Sinai.
3 1957 The assassination of King Hussein of Jordan is called for on government controlled Egyptian radio.
3 1960 Felix Mounie, the Cameroon opposition leader is assassinated in Geneva.
3 1986 Joaquim Chissano is chosen to succeed Samora Machel (who was killed in a plane crash in South Africa, Oct 19) as President of Mozambique.
3 1990 People's Republic of Mozambique becomes the Republic of Mozambique after a unanimous vote by the People's Assembly.
4 1940 Tangier, North Africa, is annexed by Spain.
4 1941 Five Vishy French ships are captured by South African forces before they can be scuttled by their crew.
4 1942 Rommel is reported to be in full retreat from El Alamein. (7000 Axis prisoners and 300 tanks have been taken by British and Commonwealth forces).
4 1955 Emperor Haile Selassie, celebrating his silver jubilee, introduces a more liberal constitution in Ethiopia.
