25 1976 Transkei becomes the first black homeland, or Bantustan, to be given independence in South Africa.
26 1954 Moslem Brotherhood fail in an attempt to kill Egyptian leader Colonel Gamal Abdel Nasser.
27 1954 Offices of Moslem Brotherhood are burnt down by mob in Cairo.
27 1964 British Prime Minister warns Rhodesian Prime Minister, Ian Smith, that their government would be committing treason if they go ahead with a unilateral declaration of independence.
27 1971 Congo is renamed Zaire.
28 1955 Israeli forces kill ten Egyptians during a rain in the Sinai.
28 1963 Colonel Christophe Soglo, army chief-of-staff, in Dahomey [now Benin] finally establishes himself as military president after deposing President Hubert Coutoucou Maga. Maga was the third leader that Soglo had helped into power, only to be removed when they proved unable to cope. Soglo was overthrown by younger military officers in 1967.
28 1991 President Sese Seko Mobutu orders Belgium to withdraw all its troops from Zaire.
29 1956 Israeli troops cross the 120 mile border with Egypt and entered the Sanai Peninsula.
29 1974 Muhammad Ali defeats George Foreman in world heavyweight championship, Zaire.
30 1942 Montgomery and the Eighth Army are triumphant at El Alamein.
30 1952 Troops round up 500 Mau Mau suspects in Kenya.
30 1956 France and Britain instruct Egypt and Israel to withdraw from the Suez Canal.
30 1961 Congolese army begins an offensive against Katangan rebels.
30 1969 Nairobi President Kanyatta bans the Kenya Peoples Union and arrests its leader Oginga Odinga.
30 1978 Reports of fighting between Ugandan and Tanzanian troops in Uganda.
31 1956 Following a 12 hour ultimatum to Egypt and Israel, British and French forces bombard military airfields near Cairo in the Suez Canal Zone. Colonel Nasser calls it "an attack on the rights and dignity of Egypt." US officials, convinced that they are working in collusion with Israel, censure Britain and France during a UN Security Council debate, requesting that "all UN members refrain from the use of force or threat of force and refrain from giving aid to Israel."
31 1976 Rhodesian commandos launch a raid across the border into Mozambique.
31 1995 Nigerian political activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa is one of eight people sentenced to death for the death of four Ogoni leaders (who died during a protest rally). Saro-Wiwa prominently protested on behalf of the Ogonis against pollution of their land by old companies. The murders are believed to have been carried out on the instructions of General Sani Abacha who heads the counties military regime.
