The Kingdom of Lesotho (previously known as Basutoland)
achieves independence (within the Commonwealth) from Britain. In doing so it
remains politically separate from the Republic of South Africa, which completely
surrounds the country. |

The White minority in South Africa votes for the creation of
a republic and full independence from Britain. |

In a two pronged attack against Israel, Egyptian forces cross
the Suez Canal and the Sinai desert whilst Syrian forces head towards the Golan

President Muhammad Ahmad Anwar Sadat of Egypt is assassinated
by an Egyptian army lieutenant. Although Libyan-backed terrorist group in
Tripoli has claimed responsibility all signs point to the extremist Islamic
group, the Moslem Brotherhood, being the true power behind the event. |
