4 1966 The Kingdom of Lesotho (previously known as Basutoland) achieves independence (within the Commonwealth) from Britain. In doing so it remains politically separate from the Republic of South Africa, which completely surrounds the country.
5 1960 The White minority in South Africa votes for the creation of a republic and full independence from Britain.
6 1973 In a two pronged attack against Israel, Egyptian forces cross the Suez Canal and the Sinai desert whilst Syrian forces head towards the Golan Heights.
6 1981 President Muhammad Ahmad Anwar Sadat of Egypt is assassinated by an Egyptian army lieutenant. Although Libyan-backed terrorist group in Tripoli has claimed responsibility all signs point to the extremist Islamic group, the Moslem Brotherhood, being the true power behind the event.
7 1956 Israeli foreign minister Golda Meir says the UN failure to resolve the Suez Crisis means they must take military action. (See Timeline: The Suez Crisis.)
7 1981 Following yesterday's assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, it is announced that Vice-President, Muhammad Hosni Mubarak will be taking over the presidency.
8 1911 Spanish troops occupy Zebuya, Morocco, after a 10 hour battle with Riff tribesmen.
8 1993 Economic sanctions against South Africa are lifted by the United Nations.
9 1962 Uganda achieves independence within the Commonwealth after 62 years of British rule. A republic, with Edward Mutebi Mutesa II as the first president, is declared exactly one year later.
10 1958 National Congolese Movement founded by Patrice Lumumba.
10 1975 Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor remarry in a remote village in Botswana.
