3 1960 Julius Kambarage Nyerere becomes Chief Minister (later to be Prime Minister and then President) when his Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) party won 70 of the 71 seats in an election.
3 1987 President Jean-Baptiste Bagaza of Burundi is ousted by military coup, Pierre Buyoya replaces him as the Chairman of the Military Committee for National Salvation.

4 1900 Danie Theron, a true Afrikaner patriot believing in the just and divine right of the Boer to stand against British interference, died during the Second Anglo-Boer War in an inferno of lyddite and shrapnel. Find out why.
4 1942 World War II: North Africa
The 2nd New Zealand Division at Alam Nayil Ridge makes a brief counter-attack against Rommel's forces, hoping to close up gaps in the front where the Deutsches Afrikakorps (DAK) had pushed through minefields.

5 1942 World War II: North Africa
President Roosevelt and Winston Churchill reach an agreement over the plan for Operation 'Torch'. Roughly 130,000 American troops will be landed at Casablanca, Oran, and Algiers, with those landing at Casablanca coming from the USA and the others form Britain. Only the date is still to be agreed.
5 1960 Léopold Sédar Senghor, poet, is the first president of the recently independent Republic of Senegal.

6 1966 South African prime minister, Hendrik Verwoerd, is assassinated whilst in parliament.
6 1968 Swaziland achieves independence from British administration. King Sobhuza II, of the ruling Dlamini house, is recognised as constitutional monarch (paramount chief).

7 1952 Ali Mahir Pasha again resigns from appointment as prime minister of Egypt. General Muhammad Naguib takes over post of president, prime minister, minister of war and commander-in-chief of the army.
7 1986 Desmond Tutu is enthroned as Archbishop of Cape Town - the first black archbishop of the South African Anglican church.

8 1964 Christophe Gbenyé declares himself president of the People's Republic of Congo, this was a government in rebellion against the presidency of Joseph Kasavubu.

9 1985 American President Ronald Reagan reverses his earlier stance on South Africa and agrees to limited sanctions.
9 1990 Samuel Kanyon Doe, president of Liberia since 25 Jul 1984, is beaten to death.
