18 1950 Egypt, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Yemen sign a security pact.
18 1953 King Faud is deposed by the Egyptian army under the command of General Mohammed Neguib and Colonel Gamal Abdel Nasser. Egypt becomes a republic.

19 1913 Black (or Natives) Land Act (No. 27 of 1913) commences - under the act Black Africans are no longer be able to own or even rent land outside of designated reserves (which amount to approximately 7% of South Africa's land).
19 1942 World War II: North Africa
British forces withdraw to the Egyptian border, Tobruk is now isolated.

20 1961 General Nasser, president of Egypt, announces a plan to protect the ancient temples at Abu Simbel by moving them to a nearby site above the expected floodwater level of the Aswan Dam. Abu Simbel is the site of two rock-cut temples of Rameses II - the facade of the largest one is particularly known for its gigantic seated figures.
20 1965 Following an unexpected coup by his defence minister Colonel Houari Boumedienne, the Algerian President Ben Bella is arrested and placed in detention.

21 1927 South Africa: The Flag Dispute
Following the introduction of a bill to provide a national flag for the Union of South Africa (in 1925 by DF Malan), Afrikaner nationalists have rebelled against plans to have a Union Jack in the centre.
21 1942 World War II: North Africa
Considered by Winston Churchill as "one of the heaviest blows I can recall during the war", Rommel's Panzerarmee Afrika captures Tobruk. Allied forces are overrun and 25,000 are captured.

22 1989 União Nacional para a Independência Total de Angola (UNITA, National Union for the Total Independence of Angola) rebels and Angola's Soviet-backed government Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola (MPLA, People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola) agree to a cease-fire at talks in Gbadolite, Zaire.

23 1956 General Nasser (Khalid Gamal`Abd an-Nasir) is officially elected president of Egypt - although he has been the effective leader of Egypt since 14 Nov 1954 in the role of Chairman of the Revolutionary Command Council.
23 1960 In preparation for Zaire's independence from Belgium on 30 June (formally Belgisch Congo and Congo Free State) Patrice Lumumba becomes the country's first prime minister.

24 1956 A BOAC airliner crashes in Nigeria, at least 26 are killed.
24 1977 Bishop Josiah Kirbira of Tanzania is the first African to preside over the Lutheran World Federation.
