4 1969 Joseph-Désiré Mobutu's troops kill over 100 students during a demonstration in the Congolese capital Kinshasa.
4 1979 Balthazar Johannes Vorster, non-executive president of South Africa, resigns after only eight months in office (he had previously been prime minister for 12 years). Ill health and the on-going exposure of the 'Information Scandal' are given as the reason for his departure.

5 1934 Fusion between JMB Hertzog's (South African Prime Minister from 1924-39) National Party and Jan Smuts' (South African Prime Minister from 1920-24 and 1939-48) South African Party to create the United South African Party. DF Malan, and like minded nationalists reject the merge and form the Gesuiwerde Nationale Party, (GNP, Purified National Party).
5 1977 President James Mancham and his Seychelles Peoples United Party (SPUP) government are removed from office by his one-time independence struggle ally, France-Albert René, and the Seychelles Democratic Party (SDP).

6 1916 Lord Kitchener, British hero of several African campaigns, is killed when the cruiser Hampshire struck a mine off the Orkneys.
6 1975 Britain, France, and the United States use their UN Security Council veto to stop a proposed arms embargo against South Africa.

7 1962 Phosphorous bombs are detonated at Algiers University by members of the Organisation de l'Armee Secrete (OAS), a secret (terrorist) French army organisation opposed to the withdrawal of French troops from Algeria.
7 1991 Zahi Hawass and fellow Egyptologists announce the discovery of a workers' cemetery and village just beyond Heit el-Shorab (the Wall of the Crow) near the Sphinx, Giza.

8 1904 US Marines land at the Moroccan port of Tangier.
8 1962 Following the burning of Algiers University yesterday, the Organisation de l'Armee Secrete (OAS) terrorist campaign continues with a bomb attack on the Hassi Touareg old filed - most of the country's wealth is dependent on its oil resources. The OAS, a secret (terrorist) French army organisation, is opposed to the withdrawal of French troops and the granting of independence to Algeria.

9 1901 Hajj Muhammad bin Abdullah Hassan, known to the British as the Mad Mullah, is defeated by British forces under the command of Colonel Swane.
9 1911 The Italian foreign minister announces that his countries interests in Africa are limited to Tripolitania and Cyrenaica - the only territories in North Africa which are not under European control (it is currently held by Turkey).

10 1911 France, who sent military aid to the Sultan of Morocco to help quell a revolt, protests the landing of Spanish troops at Larrache, south of Tangier.
