New for the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Once a number of kingdoms and empires, Belgium's King Leopold II claimed most of the Congo basin in 1876. It proved to be the most brutal of all European colonial experiments. Belgium took over the country in 1908, after international outcry, as the Belgian Congo. Independence was achieved in 1960 and known by the name Congo-Léopoldville (later Congo-Kinshasa). The country was renamed Zaïre in 1971 and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (or DRC) in 1997.
