This Day in African History — Jomo Kenyatta Finally Free

By , About.com GuideAugust 21, 2012

Follow me on:

All restrictions on Jomo Kenyatta's movement are finally lifted on 21 August 1961 (in advance of the constitutional changes which will allow Kenya to achieve full independence as a republic in 1963). This move comes a month after his release from house arrest in Gatundu, 22 kilometres outside Nairobi, on 14 July 1961. Jomo Kenyatta served nine years of detention for his alleged part in the Mau Mau Rebellion.

It is amazing that just three years after being released he went on to effectively rule Kenya for 14 years until his death. Who knows how long he would have been in power had it not been for his failing health?

Very interesting post!

Thanks,
