17 July 1828 - Introduction of Ordinance 50 in the Cape

By , About.com GuideJuly 17, 2012

Follow me on:

Acting governor of the Cape, Sir Richard Borke, issues Ordinance 50, which repeals the Caledon Code of 1809 (which required all Khoi in the Cape to have a 'fixed place of abode'). Previously Khoi servants could only leave their place of employment if they carried a pass signed by their employers. Under Ordinance 50 'people of Colour' were no longer required to enter indentured labor contracts and were permitted to own land. Find out more about Ordinance 50.
