South Sudan — First Anniversary of a Republic

The Republic of South Sudan came into existence on the 9th of July 2011, with the proclamation of independence being read out at 11.45 local (GMT +3), and the raising of the new flag at mid-day.

The people of South Sudan are celebrating with street parties and flag waving, and at an official ceremony, the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is a guest of honor.
