Where in Africa is AlgeriaThe 5th of July is the official independence date for Algeria, made all the more special this year as it is the 50th anniversary. But the country was actually declared independent by the French president Charles de Gaulle on the 3rd. Why the difference? Well the Algerian Provisional Executive, under its leader Abderrahmane Farθs, decided that year that the national day of independence should be the 5th of July as it was the 132nd anniversary of France's invasion of the territory.
