21 August 1961 - Jomo Kenyatta Finally Free

Thursday August 21, 2008
All restrictions on Jomo Kenyatta's movement are finally lifted on 21 August 1961 (in advance of the constitutional changes which will allow Kenya to achieve full independence as a republic in 1963). This move comes a month after his release from house arrest in Gatundu, 22 kilometres outside Nairobi, on 14 July 1961. Jomo Kenyatta served nine years of detention for his alleged part in the Mau Mau Rebellion.
