14 August 1882 - Cetshwayo kaMpande Meets Queen Victoria

After the defeat of his armies by the British in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, King Cetshwayo was exiled from Zululand and moved to Cape Town where he was held for a while as a prisoner of war. In 1882 Cetshwayo was permitted to travel to England for audience with Queen Victoria, where he successfully petitioned for his return to Zululand as ruler. He was a hit amongst London society and became a favorite of the public.
