7 September 1952 – Egyptian Military Oust Prime Minister

Friday September 7, 2007

Ali Mahir Pasha again resigns from appointment as prime minister of Egypt. General Muhammad Naguib takes over post of prime minister, minister of war and commander-in-chief of the army. General Naguib, acting as the front man for the Free Officers Movement, which was also led by Colonel Abdel Nasser and Colonel Anwar Sadat, seized power in Egypt on 23 July in a military coup. King Farouk was forced to abdicate 9in favor of his nine-month-old son, Fu'ad II.

Ali Mahir Pasha had been put in place to bring social and land reforms to the country, but he failed to do so fast enough. Naguib felt forced to take action – "The Army revolt was not merely a movement against the ex-King, but it has also been, still is, and always will be a force directed against corruption in all its forms."

Naguib would take the next step and abolish the monarchy in June 1953, taking the post of president as well.
